In the latest installment of US President Donald Trump’s escalating threats, he has turned his attention north — vowing to block the opening of a brand-new border bridge that Canada has already paid for.

Trump on Tuesday threatened to block the opening of the new Canada-funded border crossing, accusing Ottawa of unfair trade practices, and demanded that Washington receive at least half of the ownership of the project.

In a long post on Truth Social, Trump complained that Canada had benefited for decades from the United States and singled out the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which is under construction between Ontario and Michigan.

All You Need To Know About The Gordie Howe International Bridge:

  • The Gordie Howe International Bridge, known during development as the Detroit River International Crossing and the New International Trade Crossing, is a cable-stayed international bridge across the Detroit River.
  • The 2.5 km bridge is among the top five longest bridges in North America and is designed to provide uninterrupted freeway traffic flow.
  • The bridge will be a vital link between the US and Canada, and Michigan and Ontario. The bridge will provide uninterrupted traffic flow, as opposed to the current configuration with the nearby Ambassador Bridge that connects to city streets on the Ontario side.
  • The bridge is named after Canadian ice hockey player Gordie Howe, whose celebrated career included 25 years with the Detroit Red Wings. He died two years before construction of the bridge began.
  • Detroit’s Gordie Howe International Bridge is set to change the way people cross the Detroit River. For the first time in decades, residents will be able to walk or bike, in addition to driving, into Canada.
  • The Gordie Howe International Bridge will have six lanes, three in each direction, for vehicular traffic.
