In the space of eight days, an archipelago of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean has become the toast of the football world, delivering consecutive odds-defying performances that have put them on the brink of history. FIFA’s decision to expand its flagship World Cup tournament from 32 to 48 teams has become the breeding ground for what could be one of the defining stories of the competition.
Cape Verde have taken points off two former FIFA World Cup winners after securing back-to-back draws in their first two Group H matches. They first held powerhouse Spain to a goalless draw in Atlanta, with their goalkeeper Vozinha becoming an overnight sensation after successfully keeping Spain from finding the back of the net not once, not twice, but a whopping seven occasions.
Ahead of their next clash against Uruguay, winners of the inaugural FIFA World Cup, Cape Verde, ranked 63rd despite their stunning display against the reigning European champions, were expected to be defeated.
What followed was simply sensational.
The World Cup debutants took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute from a free-kick.
The jolted Uruguayans responded with two quick goals, heading into half-time with a huge sigh of relief.
It was short-lived.
A spirited Cape Verde side hit back with an equaliser in the 61st minute, and the score remained 2-2 by the time the referee blew the full-time whistle, bringing an end to an entertaining clash.

The Historic Goal
Eight years after making his professional debut, 29-year-old Kevin Pina announced himself to the wider footballing world with a free-kick that pierced through the scrambling Uruguayan defence and past the goalkeeper into the net on Sunday. Pina thus became part of Cape Verde’s history by becoming its first-ever goalscorer at the global event.
The Social Media Star
Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha was left in tears after his team’s opening fixture of the competition. The tears were not only because of the enormity of the feat he and his team had just pulled off, but also because he wished his family – especially his mother – had been present in the stands to witness him create history.
She did make the journey eventually for the second game.
However, off the field, fans were showing their love as they lined up to follow him on social media. His Instagram account was blowing up. From 40,000 followers before his World Cup debut, Vozinha now boasts 15.3 million followers.

Can Cape Verde Enter the Knockouts?
As per the new format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups will enter the round of 32, alongside the eight best third-placed teams. In Group H, Cape Verde are currently level on points with Uruguay but sit third due to a lower Team Conduct Score (TCS), which is based on a team’s disciplinary record. It is used as a tiebreaker when points, goal difference, goals scored, and head-to-head meetings are unable to separate teams.
Now, the big question: can Cape Verde, with a population of just over half a million, enter the knockouts?
Simple answer: yes.
How?
They next face Saudi Arabia in their final group game. Given how the Saudis have performed thus far and Cape Verde’s current form, the tiny island nation has a fighting chance to advance should they secure all three points with a win.
It’s safe to say the fears over the inclusion of lower-ranked teams diluting the level of competition and producing lopsided encounters have been put to rest.
