A 19-year-old carpenter was arrested within 36 hours of allegedly stealing ₹7.7 lakh from a house under renovation in Narayanguda, with police recovering the entire amount from his room in Bowenpally.

The accused, Deepesh Khati, a carpenter from Jodhpur district in Rajasthan and currently residing in Old Bowenpally, was arrested by Narayanguda police on Friday.

According to the police, the theft came to light after Amit Agarwal lodged a complaint on July 1 stating that his house had been undergoing renovation since December 2025. As construction work was in progress, the family had kept ₹7.7 lakh in ₹500 note bundles inside his wife’s handbags, which were stored in a wooden almirah in a first-floor bedroom.

Police said Agarwal’s wife had checked the cash on June 30 and found it intact. She left the house for a walk at around 5.30 p.m., leaving the bedroom unlocked while workers continued renovation on different floors of the house. However, at around 9.30 p.m., she checked the handbags again and found the cash missing.

Suspecting that one of the workers engaged in the renovation had stolen the money, the family searched the house before approaching the police.

A special team examined the scene of offence, analysed CCTV footage and questioned the workers engaged at the house. Based on technical evidence and investigation, police tracked down Deepesh Khati and apprehended him on Friday at around 10.20 a.m.

During the operation, police recovered the entire stolen cash of ₹7.7 lakh from the accused’s room in Bowenpally. Further investigation is underway.
