A stretch of highway in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli turned into a scene of shock when bundles of currency notes were found scattered across the road, prompting a swift police response that led to the recovery of Rs 4 lakh.

The incident was reported near the Meerut–Karnal highway, where passersby spotted Rs 500 and Rs 200 notes lying across a wide stretch of the road.

According to police, the cash was spread over nearly 500 metres near a bridge in the area.

A passerby alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and began collecting the notes carefully.

Eyewitnesses said the sight of currency lying across the road triggered confusion, but some locals showed restraint and informed authorities instead of picking it up.

Rs 4 LAKH RECOVERED

Police gathered the scattered notes and brought them to the station for counting.

The total amount recovered was Rs 4 lakh.

Officials said several bundles had bank slips attached, raising the possibility that the money had been recently withdrawn and may have fallen from a moving vehicle.

PROBE UNDERWAY, OWNER UNKNOWN

The recovered cash has been deposited in the police malkhana, and efforts are underway to trace the rightful owner.

Police are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the source of the cash and how it ended up on the highway.

NO CLAIM SO FAR

ASP Sumit Shukla said no complaint regarding loss of such a large amount has been received so far.

“We are also contacting banks to trace the origin of the cash. Anyone who has lost the money can approach the police station with proof,” he said.
