The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed an FIR against DP Singh, Chancellor of Tata Institute of Social Studies (TISS), and 34 others over alleged irregularities and corruption in inspection of medical colleges. The 34 people under scrutiny include eight officials of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, officials of National Medical Commission and representatives of private medical colleges across the country.

The FIR has been filed over alleged irregularities and corruption in inspection and regulatory processes of medical colleges across the country. DP Singh was the Chairman of UGC between 2018 and 21.

According to reports, charges against the accused in the massive corruption trail include bribery, criminal conspiracy, forgery and breach of official secrecy.

To understand the action planned on FIR, News18 reached out to National Medical Commission and Union Health Ministry. “We have reviewed the report and are evaluating the next steps," said an official from NMC while adding that NMC had received a similar complaint some months ago on which CBI action is ongoing.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had reported in the month of May that the agency has arrested a senior doctor working as Assessor with the National Medical Commission, immediately after he received a bribe of Rs 10 lakh allegedly in exchange of a positive assessment report vis-a-vis a private medical college in Karnataka. An FIR in this regard was lodged by the CBI against some of the assessors, college authorities and unknown persons and the matter is currently under investigation.

“The Commission has viewed the matter very seriously and has decided to blacklist the said Assessor, pending investigation and final verdict in the matter. As an exemplary action, it has been decided that the renewal of existing number of seats of the said college in Under-graduate and Post- graduate courses shall not be done for the AY 2025-26. Further, the application for increase of seats and starting of new courses for both UG & PG received by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board for AY 2025-26 shall be cancelled and not processed further," NMC said in press release dated July 2.

Meanwhile, an official at MoHFW, said, “The report has been recently examined, and appropriate action is under consideration," without divulging any further details.
