The car is equipped with a 60-litre water-equivalent CNG cylinder that holds roughly 9-10 kg of gas in addition to a 32-litre petrol tank.

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG has emerged as one of India’s most fuel-efficient factory-fitted CNG hatchbacks. Available mainly in the mid-range VXi variant, it is designed for commuters who want to save on fuel costs rather than chase sporty performance. The car combines Maruti Suzuki’s reputation for reliability with a CNG system that is integrated at the factory. Compared to the petrol version, the Celerio S-CNG focuses on delivering maximum mileage. With rising fuel prices, it is a perfect option for budget-focused buyers.

Powering the Celerio CNG is a 1.0-litre K10C DualJet engine, tuned specifically for CNG use. When running on gas, it produces 56.7 PS at 5300 rpm and 82.1 Nm of torque at 3400 rpm, which is slightly lower than the petrol mode. The hatchback comes only with a 5-speed manual gearbox as an automatic transmission is not available in the CNG variant. The car features three driving modes: a petrol-only start, an auto mode that begins on petrol and switches to CNG and a forced CNG mode for emergency starts on gas.

Fuel economy is a standout feature for the Celerio S-CNG. It has a certified mileage of 34.43 km/kg with some tests suggesting it could reach 35.6 km/kg. The car is equipped with a 60-litre water-equivalent CNG cylinder that holds roughly 9-10 kg of gas in addition to a 32-litre petrol tank. Switching to CNG can reduce fuel expenses by more than half, according Spinny Cost Comparison.

Safety has been a key consideration in the factory-fitted CNG system. The fuel lines use corrosion-resistant stainless steel and a micro switch prevents the engine from starting while the fuel lid is open or during refueling. The hatchback comes with six airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and reverse parking sensors. It has previously earned a 3-star rating in Global NCAP adult occupant safety tests.

Inside, the CNG tank reduces boot space compared to the petrol version as it limits luggage capacity. Standard features in the VXi variant include power windows, manual air conditioning, central locking and body-colored door handles. It lacks some of the premium touches found in the top-end petrol ZXi+ model, such as touchscreen infotainment system or alloy wheels.

Pricing for the Celerio VXi CNG is around Rs 5.98 lakh ex-showroom which is roughly Rs 95,000 higher than the petrol variant. The initial premium is offset by the long-term savings on fuel especially for drivers who cover significant distances in the city. Factory-fitted CNG technology also ensures better durability and resale value than aftermarket conversions. For daily commuters who care about low running costs and reliability, the Celerio CNG is a smart choice.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R CNG is another practical choice for city driving. Powered by a 1.0-litre K-Series engine (998 cc), it delivers a certified mileage of 34.05 km/kg. It comes with a 60-litre water-equivalent CNG cylinder and offers seating for five passengers. Safety equipment includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors. Available in LXi and VXi trims, the Wagon R CNG prices range from approximately Rs 5.89 lakh to Rs 6.42 lakh ex-showroom.

The Alto K10 CNG is designed for budget buyers who want good mileage with basic features. Its 998cc 1.0-litre DualJet engine with Dual VVT produces 55.92 bhp and 82.1 Nm of torque. Certified fuel economy is 33.85 km/kg and the car comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Available in LXi and VXi trims, the Alto K10 CNG offers features such as power steering, AC and a 7-inch touchscreen in the VXi variant. Ex-showroom prices range from Rs 5.51 lakh to Rs 6.07 lakh.

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire CNG caters to those who prefer a compact sedan with high fuel efficiency. Its 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine produces 69 bhp and 102 Nm of torque that delivers up to 34.3 km/kg mileage. The manual gearbox is paired with VXi and ZXi trims, which include six airbags, a 7-inch touchscreen, reverse parking camera and LED headlamps. Comfort features such as rear AC vents and smartphone connectivity make it a practical small sedan. Ex-showroom prices start from Rs 8.03 lakh to Rs 8.74 lakh.

The 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift S-CNG rounds off the list of efficient hatchbacks. It has a 1.2-litre Z-series engine and offers a mileage of 32.85 km/kg. Available in VXi, VXi (O) and ZXi trims, the Swift comes with six airbags as standard, a 5-speed manual gearbox and features like a 7-inch touchscreen, auto climate control and wireless charging. The 55-litre CNG cylinder limits boot space and instead of a spare wheel, a tyre repair kit is provided. Prices range from Rs 8.19 lakh to Rs 9.20 lakh ex-showroom.
