Challenger Gaurav has sharpest voice in Congress

Guwahati: At 43, Gaurav Gogoi carries the burden of reviving Assam Congress on his shoulders. Son of three-time Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, he is now tasked with stopping Himanta Biswa Sarma’s BJP juggernaut in the 2026 polls.Gaurav was thrust into the spotlight after his stunning 2024 Lok Sabha election victory from Jorhat, a seat widely seen as a BJP bastion. The result was one of the biggest setbacks for the ruling party in the state and elevated him as a key opposition figure, making him Rahul Gandhi’s leading bet in Assam.Educated as a BTech graduate in Mumbai and later earning a master’s degree from New York University’s Wagner School, Gaurav blends academic polish with political pedigree.

Now, deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav presents a markedly different style from Sarma, whose politics is often defined by an aggressive, combative approach.Since May 2025, Sarma has been accusing him and his British wife, Elizabeth Colburn, of training in Pakistan and has got the Assam Police SIT complete a probe against the couple, which has cast a shadow on Gaurav. Congress has dismissed the charges as a “desperate BJP diversion.”

Gaurav entered politics in 2014, winning the Kaliabor Lok Sabha seat. His victory was seen as a continuation of his father’s legacy, but he quickly established his own identity. Known for his articulate speeches in Parliament, Gaurav has emerged as one of the sharper voices in Congress, often taking on the govt on issues ranging from unemployment to federalism. In 2023, he was appointed president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, a role that placed him at the center of the party’s revival strategy in the state.

His leadership has focused on strengthening organizational structures, reconnecting with rural voters, and building alliances with regional parties. For the 2026 elections, Gaurav has framed the contest as a battle between the people of Assam and what he calls the “arrogance of power.” He has accused the ruling BJP of attempting to sway voters through financial inducements and divisive politics. His campaign stresses that Assam’s future lies in harmony among its diverse communities, not polarization.Despite his energy and vision, Gaurav faces formidable challenges. BJP’s organizational strength, coupled with its appeal across ethnic and religious groups, makes Congress’s task difficult. Gaurav must also navigate perceptions of dynastic politics, ensuring that his leadership is seen as merit-based rather than inherited.Maintaining unity within the opposition alliance is another test. Gogoi’s ability to forge coalitions with regional players will be crucial in countering the BJP’s dominance. For now, Gogoi stands as Congress’s most prominent leader in Assam, with his leadership set to face its toughest test yet against BJP’s deeply entrenched machinery.
