Arsenal have ended their 22-year wait for the Premier League title after Man City’s 1-1 draw at Southampton left the Gunners mathematically out of reach of their closest competitors.
Legendary Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger lauded Mikel Arteta and Co. on their feat and called on the Gunners to rejoince in the triumph.
“You did it. Champions go on when others stop," the Frenchman said following the side’s english top-flight crown.
“This is your time. Now go on and enjoy every moment," he added.
Scenes of pandemonium followed as the Arsenal squad, glued to the television during City’s trip to the Cherries, were confirmed as champions of the English top flight after their prolonged wait. The Gunners have collected 82 points from 37 matches this season and sit five points clear of chasing City, with just one game remaining in the campaign.
Having finished runners-up three seasons in a row, Arsenal finally crossed the finish line as Mikel Arteta and his side edged out a persistent Man City, coached by Arteta’s former mentor Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola also confirmed he would leave the club after nine seasons in charge of the Mancunian side. He had hoped to take the title race to the final day, as he has done on multiple occasions while chasing, but his farewell turned into an anti-climactic exit as City failed to beat Bournemouth in their penultimate fixture of the season.
This crown ends Arsenal’s wait for a league title since 2004, when Arsene Wenger secured the golden Premier League trophy by going unbeaten throughout the campaign. It is fitting that the man who has finally realised this long-held dream for the Gunners, Arteta, spent the most important spell of his playing career under the charismatic Frenchman.
Arsenal will receive the traditional guard of honour for champions on the final day of the season, on 24 May at Selhurst Park, where Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace will pay tribute to the new champions of the most followed league competition in the world.
