The Congress’s decision to break its 55-year-old alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) after the Tamil Nadu elections is expected to have profound consequences for the INDIA bloc, as the DMK has now sought changes in the seating arrangements in the Lok Sabha.

Two days after the Congress ditched the DMK to join hands with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK to form the government, DMK MP Kanimozhi wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking changes for the seating arrangements for the party’s MPs in view of “changed political circumstances."

“I write to respectfully request suitable changes in the seating arrangement of the MP belonging to the DMK in the Lok Sabha. In view of the changed political circumstances and as our alliance with the Indian National Congress has come to an end, it may not be appropriate for our Members to continue occupying the present seating arrangement alongside them in the House," Kanimozhi wrote in the letter.

“I therefore request your good office to kindly make the necessary arrangements for the Hon’ble Members of the DMK Parliamentary Party to be allotted separate seating, enabling them to effectively discharge their responsibility in the August House," she added.

DMK’s Resolution Against Congress After Split

The letter came after the DMK made no attempt to hide its anger against the Congress for allying with the TVK, passing an elaborate resolution against the grand old party that criticised its failure to change its “old political character."

During a meeting of the legislature party, the DMK passed a series of resolutions thanking the people of the state for their support and authorising party president MK Stalin with absolute decision-making powers.

The DMK strongly condemned the decision of the Congress to move away from the secular progressive alliance. The resolution said the Congress had secured one Rajya Sabha seat and 28 Assembly constituencies as part of the DMK-led alliance, and accused the party of shifting towards an alternative front within days by jeopardising the victory achieved through the hard work of alliance cadres.

The DMK maintained that the Congress party’s actions are a direct threat to the stability of the state at a time when no single party holds a majority. The TVK defied expectations and unravelled power dynamics in Tamil Nadu by bagging 108 seats, but failed to reach the majority number even after the support of five Congress MLAs.

Despite the setback, the DMK remains focused on preventing “anti-Dravidian forces" from gaining a foothold. The Legislature Party passed a resolution granting MK Stalin total autonomy to make immediate political decisions to navigate the crisis.
