 Here’s how the feature works

OpenAI has introduced a new integration that lets ChatGPT users identify songs directly in the chatbot using Apple’s Shazam technology. The feature enables users to recognise music playing nearby without switching to a separate app.

With the integration, users can ask ChatGPT to identify songs, preview tracks and save discoveries to their Shazam library.

The addition expands ChatGPT’s growing list of third-party apps and builds on earlier integrations such as Apple Music and Spotify. The Shazam app inside ChatGPT is rolling out globally and is available across iOS, Android and web versions of the chatbot. Here are all the details about the new Shazam feature in ChatGPT:

Shazam in ChatGPT: What this feature is and how it works

The new feature brings Apple’s Shazam music recognition technology directly into ChatGPT as a third-party app.

Shazam has been helping users identify songs playing around them for more than two decades. The latest integration enables that capability within a conversational interface.Once connected, users can simply type prompts such as “Shazam, what’s playing?” or “Shazam, what is this song?” to identify music without leaving the chatbot. According to the app description, “Use @Shazam in your prompt to discover music with the same powerful recognition technology trusted by hundreds of millions worldwide.

Preview songs inline, and save discoveries directly to your Shazam library.”To enable the feature, users need to connect to the Shazam app on ChatGPT’s Apps page. This can be done by visiting the apps directory on OpenAI’s website, signing in and selecting Connect to link Shazam with the chatbot. After linking the app, users can activate the feature by typing "@Shazam" or starting their prompt with the word “Shazam.”

A box appears that launches the music recognition service, which listens to the audio playing nearby.Once a song is identified, ChatGPT displays details such as the song title, artist name, album artwork, and a preview option. Shazam app users can save the track to their library. The integration works even if the Shazam app is not installed, allowing users to identify songs directly through ChatGPT. The results appear on a card similar to what users see in the standalone Shazam app.Because the feature runs inside ChatGPT, the song identification process can continue as part of a broader conversation. For example, users can ask ChatGPT to recommend similar music or create a playlist based on the identified track through Apple Music. The Shazam integration also works alongside other music services already available in ChatGPT, including Apple Music and Spotify. These integrations allow users to link their listening preferences with the chatbot and organise music discoveries.ChatGPT also includes a toggle that allows the system to reference previous conversations about a user’s music taste. If enabled, the chatbot may use that information when responding to music-related prompts. The Shazam app for ChatGPT is currently rolling out globally and is available on ChatGPT for iOS, Android and the web.
