Chechen Kadyrovite fighters signal readiness to support Iran if US launches ground assault, Iran warns against invasion as tensions with US and Israel escalate

As speculation grows over a possible US ground assault on Iran, a new and potentially explosive name has entered the conversation: the Chechen fighters.
According to Iran’s state-run Press TV, military units from Chechnya have expressed readiness to deploy in support of Iran if American troops enter Iranian territory, a development that, if it materialises, could further internationalise an already widening war.
These forces are commonly referred to as the Kadyrovites, a pro-Russian Chechen units loyal to Ramzan Kadyrov, the powerful head of the Chechen Republic and a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Who Are the Kadyrovites?
The Kadyrovites are armed formations based in Chechnya, a republic in southern Russia that fought two brutal wars against Moscow after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Their current structure emerged after the Second Chechen War, when Russia crushed the separatist insurgency and installed a pro-Kremlin leadership under the Kadyrov family.
Today, these fighters operate as part of Russia’s broader security architecture, though they are known for their personal loyalty to Ramzan Kadyrov rather than the Russian military chain of command alone.
Over the years, the Kadyrovites have built a reputation for being heavily armed, fiercely ideological, and often used in high-profile or politically sensitive conflicts involving Russia’s strategic interests.
Why Are They Being Linked to Iran?
The reported offer of support comes as the US-Israel-Iran conflict enters its second month, with Washington significantly increasing its military presence in the region.
Thousands of troops from the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division have already arrived in West Asia, joining additional deployments of Marines, sailors, and Special Operations forces. Reports have also suggested that the Trump administration is examining more aggressive options, including possible action tied to Iran’s uranium stockpiles and strategic sites such as Kharg Island.
Against that backdrop, Iran has intensified its warnings against any ground incursion.
A senior Iranian military spokesperson recently said Tehran would “cut off the legs of any aggressor" attempting to invade the country, a sign that Iran is preparing not just for missile exchanges, but for the possibility of direct land combat.
Could Chechen Fighters Actually Join the War?
At this stage, there is no official confirmation from Moscow that Chechen units are being mobilised for Iran, and the report remains based on Iranian media claims.
However, the very mention of the Kadyrovites is significant.
These fighters have previously been deployed or signalled readiness in conflicts where Russia sees itself confronting Western influence, and their possible involvement would fit a broader pattern of proxy or allied force mobilisation that already defines much of Iran’s regional strategy.
Iran has long relied on a network of aligned armed groups across the region, including militias in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Afghanistan. The prospect of Chechen involvement would mark a notable extension of that support architecture into the post-Soviet space.
Why It Matters
Russia remains one of Iran’s closest strategic partners, with deep ties in arms cooperation, intelligence coordination, and regional diplomacy.
While the Kremlin has denied some reports of direct wartime assistance to Tehran, analysts say the possibility of Russian-linked auxiliary forces entering the equation would raise the stakes dramatically.
If the war moves from airstrikes and missile barrages to a ground conflict, the battlefield could quickly evolve into a far more complex theatre involving not just Iran and the US, but also foreign fighters and aligned forces with their own histories, loyalties, and geopolitical baggage.
