A weather expert noted that Chennai ;may be the only coastal district recording around 37C-38C', while other coastal districts may stay slightly cooler.

Chennai residents, stepping out to vote during Tamil Nadu assembly elections on Thursday (April 23), be ready to battle sweltering heat while waiting in long queues. Locals are advised to wear light-coloured clothes, carry water bottles and umbrellas as IMD has warned that hot and humid weather may persist.

How Hot Is It Going To Get?

According to a Times of India report, daytime temperatures are set to touch 37C-38C across the state. But the real discomfort comes from humidity — coastal areas are already seeing 60%-80% relative humidity, pushing the “feels-like" temperature to a punishing 40C-41C.

Which Areas Will Feel It The Worst?

Inland districts will bear the brunt of the heat. As V R Durai, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre at RMC Chennai, was quoted by TOI: “Relative humidity will be lower, around 20%-30%, over interior districts, so actual temperatures there may be higher."

Will Chennai Get Any Sea Breeze Relief?

Not quite. Durai noted that Chennai “may be the only coastal district recording around 37C-38C," while other coastal districts may stay slightly cooler.

Expect above-normal maximums — 2C-3C higher — over interior districts through April 25. A silver lining: isolated light rain is possible over Western Ghat districts and southern coastal areas including Kanyakumari and Tuticorin.

Heading Out To Vote? Here’s How To Stay Safe:

• Step out early morning or after 4 PM to avoid peak heat hours

• Wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothing that allows your skin to breathe

• Carry a water bottle and sip regularly — don’t wait until you’re thirsty

• Pack ORS sachets in case you feel dizzy, drained or dehydrated

• Use an umbrella, cap or hat to shield yourself from direct sunlight

• Elderly voters and those with existing health conditions should take extra precautions and consider stepping out with a companion

• Limit time spent standing in long queues under the open sun wherever possible

Stay hydrated. Your vote matters — and so does your health.
