The Chhattisgarh High Court sentenced Amit Jogi, son of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, to life imprisonment in the 2003 murder of Ram Avtar Jaggi, a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader. Amit Jogi was convicted in a case relating to the killing of Jaggi, a political rival of his father, more than two decades ago. While Jogi had been acquitted by the trial court in 2007, the High Court overturned that acquittal.
Ram Avtar Jaggi, the NCP treasurer at the time, had been a close associate of former Congress leader Vidya Charan Shukla, who was a rival of Ajit Jogi within the party. Jaggi was shot dead on June 4, 2003, in Raipur while returning from a meeting to organise a large NCP rally that was to be attended by Sharad Pawar. Amit Jogi had been tried on conspiracy charges in connection with the case, but the trial court had acquitted him, while 28 others were convicted.
Jaggi’s son, Satish, described the High Court’s decision to overturn Amit Jogi’s acquittal as a “true tribute” to his father.
Jaggi had originally been a Congress member and a staunch supporter of Shukla. After Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000, Ajit Jogi was chosen as the state’s first Chief Minister, sidelining Shukla and creating a rift within the party. In the 2003 election year, Shukla left the Congress to join the NCP, and Jaggi followed him.
Amit Jogi’s acquittal remained undisturbed for nearly 17 years. In April 2024, the Chhattisgarh High Court dismissed appeals filed by the convicted co‑accused, upholding their convictions while leaving Jogi’s acquittal intact. The turning point came on November 6 last year, when the Supreme Court allowed a special leave petition filed by the CBI against an earlier High Court order that had rejected, on the grounds of delay, the CBI’s 2011 application for leave to appeal against Jogi’s acquittal.
