Child rape convict Dinesh escapes Bareilly Central Jail farm as guards watch reels, 11 officials including Jailer Neeraj Kumar suspended, search on in Amroha, probe ordered

A jail inmate serving life sentence in the Central Jail of Bareilly escaped after scaling the walls of the prison complex while the guards watched reels on social media, Times of India reported. He had been convicted for raping a child.

Eleven officials of the prison have now been suspended over the incident, the report said. Jailer Neeraj Kumar and Deputy Jailer Vandana Chowdhary were suspended by Director General (Prisons) PC Meena.

Strong departmental action was recommended against senior jail superintendent Avinash Gautam. Seven low-ranking jail staffers were also suspended following this major breach in the security of this jail in Meerut.

“Action has been taken against the personnel for dereliction of duty," the DG was quoted saying by ToI.

The convict, identified as 22-year-old Dinesh, was sent to work in a farm adjoining the prison along with 45 other inmates. Ten guards were assigned to keep a watch over them.

An official of the jail informed that the guards were distracted while on duty which led to this embarrassing incident for the UP police.

“They were busy watching reels on their mobile phones instead of keeping watch over inmates. Dinesh used that lapse to scale the wall and escape," the official said, as quoted in the report.

Dinesh is a resident of the Nanheda village in Amroha. The police have reportedly formed squads to search for him. Searches are underway in Amroha and other possible hideouts.

This incident is more bothersome since this is the second since 2024 that the jail authorities have failed prevent a jail break. In October, 2024, a jail inmate Harpal who was convicted for a murder had escaped somewhat similarly while working in the jail’s agricultural farm, according to a PTI report from that time.

Central Jail in Bareilly is a sensitive spot since it houses several high-profile and notorious criminals in its high security barracks. Now, this second incident of jail break will raise questions on the elaborate arrangements such as CCTV cameras, police post inside the campus and other measures. The repeat of such events casts doubt over the deployment of personnel during outside work.

Further investigation is underway and the authorities have said more action will be taken after detailed inquiry report is provided.
