Over £50 million pound (Rs 6,38,27,25,000) was raised for cancer charity by a Polish social media influencer after a nine-day nonstop online stream, which was joined by several celebrities like Musician Chris Martin, tennis star Iga Świątek and footballer Robert Lewandowski.
23-year-old social media influencer, Piotr Garkowski, nicknamed Łatwogang, started streaming from his studio flat in Warsaw with charity song dedicated to children battling cancer on loop for nine days straight, filling time with entertaining dares and celebrity appearances.
The earned money will support the Cancer Fighters foundation that supports children with cancer and their parents.
According to The Guardian, the streamer, previously best known for recording with Ed Sheeran a Polish language version of his hit Azizam, was joined by a parade of country’s leading music artists, actors, sportspeople and influencers, who recreated their biggest viral hits and pop culture moments.
One of the celebrities who joined Garkowski’s stream was Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who sent a video of himself performing an improvised keyboard song featuring the Polish word for “pushing" the fundraising total even further, adding: “Sorry for my Polish!"
Later, Russian-born Polish-naturalised speed skater Vladimir Semirunniy donated his silver medal from the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in the 10,000 metres event. He even followed the host’s example and shaved his head in solidarity, as did numerous other guests.
The campaign was endorsed on social media while Poland and Barcelona’s footballer Robert Lewandowski danced on his TikTok and donated more than £200,000 (Rs 2,55,37,880).
Six-time tennis grand slam champion Iga Świątek also gave her support, donating more than £20,000 and two tickets to her match at this year’s Wimbledon tournament, The Guardian reported.
A teammate, ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, also recorded a social video in which he was joined by Barcelona and Spain’s Lamine Yamal.
According to The Guardian, despite an initial goal of just £102,000 (Rs 1,30,24,318), the stream is understood to be among the highest-ever fundraising events on YouTube.
On Monday, Łatwogang and Bedoes 2115 thanked supporters on Instagram, congratulating them for “what you did for the kids and [how you] moved the entire country".
“We ask the media … to publicise the fundraiser and the awareness that cancer is not a death sentence. Because that is all we care about," they added.
During the nine-day long live stream, Chief of Mission of Kosova in Poland Drilon S. Gashi said in a post on X, “Poland is a great country of solidarity, and Cancer Fighters is a great initiative of solidarity! Piotrek Garkowski (Łatwogang)’s live stream initiative in support of the fight against cancer has already achieved a new Guinness world record, surpassing Mr. Beast’s previous record."
