The football world can breathe a collective sigh of relief.
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed that Christian Eriksen is recovering well following a frightening collapse during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine.
The 34-year-old midfielder was rushed to hospital after falling to the ground in the 64th minute of Sunday’s match in Odense, triggering distressing scenes that immediately brought back memories of his cardiac arrest during Euro 2020.
Fortunately, early indications have been encouraging.
‘He Is in Good Spirits’
Boesen revealed that Eriksen had been briefly unconscious after collapsing but said the implanted pacemaker he has worn since 2021 functioned exactly as intended.
Providing an update on Monday morning, the Danish team doctor offered reassuring news.
“I spoke to Christian this morning, and he is doing well," Boesen said.
“He is with his family and in good spirits."
“The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home."
Boesen also confirmed that medical staff remain in regular contact with Denmark’s players and coaching staff following the incident.
Disturbing Déjà Vu
The scenes were eerily reminiscent of Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s European Championship clash against Finland in 2021, when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch.
On Sunday, medical personnel immediately rushed onto the field after Eriksen went down, while players from both Denmark and Ukraine formed a protective circle around him to shield him from public view.
The match was subsequently abandoned, and Eriksen was escorted from the pitch before being taken to hospital.
Teammates Praise Rapid Response
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg described the moment as deeply unsettling.
“There was a throw-in and I walked calmly to the touchline. Then I turned around and I saw Christian collapse," Hojbjerg told TV2.
“We know very well what that means and the reaction was extremely rapid and respectful."
Denmark coach Brian Riemer, who previously worked with Eriksen at Brentford, admitted the incident had shaken everyone involved.
“It was an extremely shocking experience for everyone, the staff, the players and the opponents," he said.
Since returning from his 2021 cardiac arrest, Eriksen has rebuilt his career with remarkable determination, playing at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024 before joining VfL Wolfsburg.
