The City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain (CITIIS) 2.0 project with novel waste management projects for Thiruvananthapuram is set to be implemented soon. An amount of ₹9.36 crore, constituting the Union and State government share, has now been sanctioned for Phase I of the CITIIS 2.0 programme for improved and integrated solid waste management in the capital city.
The project will be active for the next four years with Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL) chosen as the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the project. Over the four years, projects worth ₹135 crore are expected to be taken up under the project. Funding support for the project is also provided by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the German Development Bank (KfW).
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched CITIIS 2.0 with an aim to put in place a complementary mechanism to the existing Smart Cities Mission. The project will nurture climate-sensitive planning and action in the city. Financial assistance will be provided for competitively selected projects promoting circular economy with focus on integrated waste management.
Under the project, both decentralised and centralised waste management practices will be promoted. Some of them are existing models such as aerobic bins, resource recovery facilities, material recovery facilities and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) plants. Some of the existing facilities will also be modernised.
