The Assam Police have launched a probe into Monday’s incident of a cold drink bottle being hurled at CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy in Golaghat district. While five people, suspected to have links with the Assam Congress, have been detained, the police are scanning the CCTV footage to identify the prime accused.

The incident took place near Rajiv Bhawan, where Congress workers were staging a demonstration over the alleged irregularities in the Gorukhuti dairy project, particularly the reported sale of 90 cows of Gir breed. The bottle did not cause any injury or damage. The five have been booked under sections related to breach of peace and obstruction of public duty.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called the act a publicity stunt. “It would have been better if the bottle had hit me," he said, calling it “frustration and bankruptcy of ideas within the Congress camp".

The incident took place near Rajiv Bhawan.

However, the Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the act. “This is not just mischief, it reflects a dangerous mindset. The Congress has turned to street-level provocation when it’s unable to face the public democratically," said a BJP spokesperson.

Meanwhile, the Congress distanced itself from the incident, calling it the work of “individual miscreants" .The party maintained its stand on the dairy project issue, accusing the ruling BJP of selling off state assets and diverting public attention from core issues through theatrics.

Political analysts suggest the episode could have lasting effects, with both sides using it to shape their narratives ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. For the BJP, it is a chance to project strong leadership and stability, while the Congress faces a risk of being seen as reckless amid rising public scrutiny.
