At the Congress party’s Annual Legal Conclave 2025 held in Delhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi distanced himself from “hero worship", rejecting chants from party workers calling him “Desh ka Raja."

The slogan—“Desh ka Raja kaisa ho? Rahul Gandhi jaisa ho"—was raised by Congress supporters during his address, prompting Gandhi to immediately push back.

“Main Raja nahi hoon. Raja banna bhi nahi chahta hoon. Main Raja ke concept ke against hoon," he said, underlining his opposition to such slogans signifying personality cults.

Addressing the gathering, Gandhi said that he does not endorse monarchical or dynastic ideas in leadership. He said he sees himself not as a ruler, but as a representative of the people.

During the conclave, the Congress deliberated on the Constitutional challenges and the way forward, according to party leaders.

The event comes amid the party’s continuous refrain that the Constitution is under attack from the BJP.

The event was also addressed by AICC’s Department of Law, Human Rights, and RTI chairman Abhishek Singhvi and other top Congress leaders, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

Party general secretaries K C Venugopal, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and Mukul Wasnik and treasurer Ajay Maken also attended the event.

Earlier, Singhvi said chief ministers of Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh, and a few former chief ministers will be among the 41 distinguished speakers at the daylong conclave, as will be former judges, legal academics and human rights activists.

Singhvi said the full-day conclave is being organised under the theme ‘Constitutional Challenges: Perspectives and Pathways.’

He said the event takes place at a pivotal moment in the Indian republic’s journey — a time that calls for renewed commitment to the foundational values of our democracy.
