The Toronto Blue Jays are dealing with a problem just days before Opening Day. Their bullpen is not fully ready, and injuries have made things harder. But in the middle of all this, a new name is starting to stand out.
Connor Seabold, who was not in the spotlight earlier, is now getting serious attention. The 30-year-old right-handed pitcher was signed in January for Triple-A Buffalo with a spring training invite. At that time, it looked like a simple depth move. Now, things have changed quickly. After strong performances in camp, Seabold is suddenly being seen as a real option for the main roster.

Connor Seabold has impressed during spring training, and people around the team have noticed.
In a Jays Digest video, Nick Gosse said, “I like seeing guys come up who aren’t really under-the-radar guys. He is a hidden gem.”Seabold’s numbers back that claim. His fastball speed has jumped from around 92 mph to nearly 96 mph, even touching 97. That is a big change. His whiff rate, which was under 22 percent last season, has now reached 46.8 percent in spring training. He also leads the Blue Jays camp with 13 strikeouts.
What makes it more interesting is how he has improved his pitch mix. He added a new slider in the mid-80s, along with a strong changeup. Gosse explained, “He continued to develop himself, worked with Pete Walker, got his fastball ticked up, got a new slider, got some really good changeup.”His past record was not very strong. Last season, he split time between the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves systems and had a 6.07 ERA in Triple-A.
But his current form looks very different, and that is why the team is paying attention. At the same time, the Blue Jays are dealing with uncertainty around Yimi García. The 35-year-old reliever is coming back from right elbow surgery. He threw his first pitch of the season on March 14, but he is still not fully ready. The team has already confirmed he will not be part of the Opening Day roster.García said, “I feel good right now, I feel better than last season.”
Still, the team is being careful with him. They are not rushing his return, especially because of his age and recent injury. There are more concerns as well. Pitchers like Ricky Tiedemann, Shane Bieber, and José Berríos are dealing with injuries. Bowden Francis is also out after surgery. With so many issues, the team needs someone reliable. That is where Seabold fits in. If he continues this form, he could play an important role early in the season. For now, he looks like a timely solution for a team that needs help.
