High Court Chief Justice Dheeraj Singh Thakur said the Constitution has been the guiding force for democracy and a beacon for the judiciary since it came into force on January 26, 1950.
The core principles of the rule of law, non-discriminatory treatment of people, protection of civil rights and the supremacy of the public constitute the strength of Indian democracy, Justice Thakur observed.
Addressing the legal fraternity at the High Court after unfurling the national flag as part of the 77th Republic Day celebrations on Monday, Justice Thakur said the Indian judiciary acts as an instrument of social change, a guardian of civil rights and a pillar that maintains balance in the federal system of governance. He said it was the bounden duty of every citizen to uphold Constitutional values.
He observed that the nation remained committed to participatory democracy despite numerous challenges and stressed that people should continue to preserve India’s social fabric.
Justice Thakur expressed confidence that the youth, with their energy and capabilities, would lead the country on the path of progress.
Additional Solicitor General Challa Dhanunjay, Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas, Bar Council Chairman N. Dwarakanath Reddy and High Court Advocates’ Association vice-president K.V. Raghuveer were among those who spoke.
