The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a “yellow" alert for light rain and gusty winds in the national capital on Monday as a fresh western disturbance influenced northwest India. Scattered light rain is also likely on Tuesday.

Another western disturbance is expected around April 2, with chances of very light rain in Delhi on April 3 and 4.

Rainfall on Sunday was largely confined to the Himalayan region and parts of northern Punjab. Most areas of Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh remained dry.

“We saw gusty winds in Rajasthan too, but in Delhi, it remained mostly clear, leading to the maximum rising quickly," the Hindustan Times quoted Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet, as saying.

Despite the “yellow" alert, Delhi experienced largely sunny conditions on Sunday. Temperatures climbed rapidly during the day, with the maximum reaching 36.2°C, four degrees above normal and close to the season’s high of 36.8°C recorded on March 11. The minimum temperature stood at 19.8°C, two degrees above normal.

Palawat said there are chances of rain in Delhi on Monday during the day before the current western disturbance weakens. He added that early April could start on a relatively cool note.

“We will then get another western disturbance around April 2 and 3, followed by another between April 6 and 9, so the temperature is unlikely to rise too rapidly."

Amateur weatherman Navdeep Dahiya also pointed to continued weather activity in the coming weeks. He said frequent western disturbances could prevent heatwave conditions through much of April.

“Frequent western disturbances will keep temperatures under check and estimated to be 2-5°C below normal across northwest and central parts of the country at least till April 20," he said on X.

Forecasts indicate a noticeable dip in temperatures on Monday, with overcast skies and possible rain keeping the maximum between 30°C and 32°C. Similar conditions are expected on Tuesday, bringing a cooler end to the month. Minimum temperatures are likely to remain between 20°C and 22°C on Monday.

March began on a warm note in Delhi with limited rainfall, but the latter half of the month saw multiple western disturbances bringing moisture and rain to the region. Temperatures remained relatively cool until the weekend before rising sharply by nearly 4°C over the past 48 hours. The maximum temperature was 32.6°C on Friday and 33.6°C on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 198 on Sunday, up from 154 earlier. Forecasts from the Centre’s Air Quality Early Warning System (EWS) indicate that AQI levels are likely to remain in the moderate range for the next nine days.
