Corporation worker dies in mudslide in Madurai

Madurai: A contract guest worker from Bihar employed by the city corporation was killed after soil caved in during underground sewerage maintenance work in zone 4 on Friday morning.The deceased was Mukesh Mandal, 39, who was working as a ‘fitter’ under the corporation’s engineering division. His works included opening sewer lines and inspecting underground drainage routes, officials said.According to police, Mukesh was engaged in excavation and repair work on an underground sewer line on Friday when the soil above the trench suddenly collapsed. He was buried under the debris and died on the spot. Senior corporation officials rushed to the spot and initiated an inquiry. Authorities are examining if prescribed safety norms were followed and adequate protective measures were in place at the site. The findings of the inquiry will determine further action, officials added.Police retrieved the body and sent it to Govt Rajaji Hospital for autopsy. They registered a case and are investigating.
