The cost of transporting sugarcane from agricultural fields after harvest should not be imposed on farmers, said Deputy Commissioner of Mandya Kumar.
Presiding over a meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Mandya on Thursday to resolve a dispute between farmers and lorry owners, Mr. Kumar said that the government and the district administration will protect the interest of the farmers.
While directing the sugar factories against deducting the cost of transportation of sugarcane from the amount payable to the farmers towards purchase of the sugarcane, Mr. Kumar said that the factories should discuss with the lorry owners about bearing the cost of transportation so that the farmers are not burdened.
Mr. Kumar cautioned the lorry owners against collecting the transport fee fixed by the Directorate of Sugarcane Development and Sugar from the farmers. He advised them and the management of sugar factories to coordinate among themselves and bear the cost. The sugar factories should discuss the issue with their managements and take an appropriate decision, he said.
Meanwhile, MLA for Melukote Darshan Puttannaiah, who was also present at the meeting, said that the lorry owners and sugar factories should not compel the farmers to bear the cost of transporting their sugarcane.
Mr. Puttannaiah also sought to highlight the shortage of labour for harvesting sugarcane in Mandya district. Labourers from other parts of the State and the country come to Mandya for harvesting; even transportation of sugarcane is handled by them, he said.
The MLA said that around 206 batches of labourers from different parts of the State and country are in Mandya at present for harvesting sugarcane.
C.D. Gandhadhar, Chairman of Mysuru Sugar Company (Mysugar); Shanmugam, Karnataka State Lorry Owners’ Association President; Hemavathi, Regional Transport Officer, Mandya; and Venugopal, Mandya District Lorry Owners’ Association President, were also present at the meeting.
