The deceased, identified as Jatin Kumar, had been preparing for the highly competitive medical entrance examination for several years.
A 22-year-old medical aspirant died by suicide at his residence in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad on Friday morning, just two days before the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-UG examination scheduled for June 21.
The deceased, identified as Jatin Kumar, had been preparing for the highly competitive medical entrance examination for several years and had allegedly failed to clear the test despite multiple attempts.
Police said they recovered a video from Jatin's mobile phone, which is said to be recorded shortly before his death, in which he spoke about being exhausted by the repeated examination cycle and his inability to qualify for NEET despite several attempts.
According to family members, Jatin went to his room, where he usually studied, on Thursday night. When he did not come out the next morning, the family checked on him and found him dead, and then alerted the police.
Teams from Ghaziabad's Vijay Nagar police station and the forensic unit reached the spot shortly after receiving information and conducted an on-site investigation. The body was subsequently sent for post-mortem examination.
ACP Nagar Kotwali Upasana Pandey said the video recovered from Jatin’s phone, appeared to have been recorded before his death. She added that the video recovered from the student's phone is being examined and statements of family members are being recorded as part of the investigation.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of the NEET examination process after the National Testing Agency cancelled the May 3 exam over allegations of a paper leak and other irregularities.
In a separate case in Madhya Pradesh's Indore, a 21-year-old NEET aspirant, Avantika Maurya, died after falling from a height under suspicious circumstances on Thursday night.
Avantika, a resident of Dhar district, had been staying with her elder sister, a doctor, in Indore while preparing for the medical entrance examination. According to police, the incident occurred around 11.30 pm.
Family members said she had been speaking on her mobile phone while standing on the balcony before moving to the upper level of the four-storey building. Moments later, they heard a loud sound and found her critically injured.
She was rushed to a hospital but died during treatment early Friday morning. Police said CCTV footage, phone records and other evidence are being examined, and no suicide note has been recovered so far.
