Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Friday directed Tihar Jail authorities to file a detailed response on a plea filed by 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who has sought permission to make a phone call to his family.

Patiala House Court’s Special Judge Chander Jit Singh issued notice to the jail superintendent and posted the matter for further hearing on August 1.

The jail authorities informed the Court that Rana has been provided with a bed and mattress during his custody, news agency ANI reported.

Earlier on June 9, the Court had allowed him a single supervised call under jail rules. Rana is in judicial custody after NIA interrogation in the 26/11 Mumbai Terror Attack case. A first chargesheet against him was filed in 2012.

Rana’s judicial custody has been extended till August 13. The agency had earlier collected voice and handwriting samples from Rana and argued for extended custody, citing non-cooperation and evasive responses during interrogation.

Earlier, Tahawwur Rana made some explosive revelations to the Mumbai Crime Branch, saying that he was a trusted agent of the Pakistan Army and was in Mumbai during the 2008 attacks.

Rana, who was recently extradited from the US, allegedly provided Headley with handwritten notes containing instructions, coordinates, and maps that were used to identify and target locations during the 26/11 attacks.

The NIA planned to take Rana to Mumbai and other cities to recreate the sequence of events leading up to the terror attack, which resulted in 166 fatalities.

Rana was extradited from the United States to India on April 10 after the US Supreme Court rejected his review plea against the extradition on April 4.

At least 166 people were killed in the gruesome bloodshed on the streets of Mumbai and in the Hotel Taj.
