As part of a call given by the Communist Party of India (CPI) State committee, the CPI leaders, along with several local people, staged a protest against the alleged ‘medical mafia’ in the State, in Tirupati on Saturday. The rally was taken out from Old Municipal Corporation office via Tilak Road to Nalugu Kalla Mandapam.

CPI national secretary and national executive member was the chief guest at the event. Speaking to the media, Mr. Narayana criticised the government for its failure in curbing the medical mafia operating within the State. He warned that raids would be launched on medicine storage facilities unless the government took immediate action against agencies distributing fake and substandard drugs.

“Fake medicines are rampant in the State and it is affecting the health of the common man. The pharma manufacturing companies are supplying substandard medicines. The officials, who are supposed to conduct inspections at medical agencies and medical shops, have been collecting monthly bribes and ignoring this burning issue,” he alleged.

The CPI leader demanded swift action within a week against the alleged medical mafia and its members. CPI State executive members A. Ramanaidu, district secretary P. Murali, and others participated in the programme.
