The mortal remains of veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former party general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy were donated to Gandhi Hospital here for medical research, as his family members and party colleagues paid their last respects. Amid slogans like ‘Lal Salam’ and ‘Amar Rahe’, his body was handed over to the hospital authorities here on Sunday.
Earlier in the day, leaders from various political parties, including Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, former Vice-President M.Venkaiah Naidu, CPI general secretary D. Raja, and BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, paid rich tributes at Maqdoom Bhavan in Himayatnagar.
Mr.Chandrababu Naidu, who left a message in the condolence book, recalled his long association with the CPI leader and their participation in various people’s movements. He remembered Sudhakar Reddy’s key role in national politics and their combined efforts in the formation of governments at the Centre.
“Sudhakar Reddy had special affection for me. He personally supported my work. I condole the passing away of such a good friend and well-wisher,” the A.P. Chief Minister said.
Mr.Venkaiah Naidu described Sudhakar Reddy’s demise as an irreparable loss to politics.
As a mark of respect, the State government organised a gun salute to the mortal remains before they were shifted to Gandhi Hospital in a procession. Several Ministers, MLAs and former MPs, including B. Vinod Kumar, also paid their respects.
Sudhakar Reddy’s body was kept at Maqdoom Bhavan for public viewing after being brought from Care Hospital in Gachibowli, where he passed away due to age-related ailments on Friday night. In line with his wishes, his eyes were donated to L.V. Prasad Eye Hospital. By donating his body to science, Sudhakar Reddy has continued the legacy of several Left leaders who have done so in the past.
The bereaved family members, including his wife B.V. Vijayalakshmi and two sons Nikhil and Kapil, bid a tearful farewell to him.
