He scores goals at World Cups. He breaks records that have stood for decades. But sometimes, the greatest thing Cristiano Ronaldo does has nothing to do with football. In a moment that has melted hearts across the world, the Portugal captain personally reached out to Andrés, a young Venezuelan boy who lost everything in the devastating twin earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on June 24, 2026.
The disaster, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, has claimed over 1,400 lives, left hundreds still missing and reduced entire neighbourhoods in Caracas and La Guaira to rubble.
Andrés' story had gone viral on social media a young boy amid the ruins of what was once his home, his loss palpable in every image and video that circulated online. Ronaldo saw it. And then Ronaldo acted. The 41-year-old sent Andrés a personal message of encouragement, telling him to stay strong.
But he did not stop there. In a gesture that few at the very top of world football would think to make, Ronaldo went one step further - inviting Andrés to attend one of his games in person.
"I want you to attend one of my games," Ronaldo told him.Four words. And for a boy who had lost so much, they must have meant everything. It is not the first time Ronaldo has shown his humanity in the face of tragedy. In 2023, he sent humanitarian aid to Turkey and Syria following the devastating earthquakes there.
Earlier this week at the World Cup, he and the entire Portugal squad observed a minute of silence before training in Miami in tribute to the victims of the Venezuela disaster. The earthquakes have cast a long shadow over this World Cup. FIFA ordered moments of silence across all matches on June 26 and 27 in honour of those killed. Rising Venezuelan youth player Yimvert Berroteran, just 18 years old, was among those confirmed dead, a loss that struck the football world deeply. In the middle of all that grief, Ronaldo's message to Andrés arrived like a small light in a very dark moment.
