Cristiano Ronaldo’s final FIFA World Cup ended in heartbreak as Portugal were knocked out by Spain after a 1-0 Round of 16 defeat. The 41-year-old forward left the field in tears after Mikel Merino’s 91st-minute winner ended Portugal’s campaign.
While Ronaldo could not keep his World Cup dream alive, he still walked away with a historic record that no other player has achieved. During the tournament, he became the first footballer in history to score in six different FIFA World Cups, adding another milestone to one of the most successful international careers the game has seen.
Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups
Portugal’s World Cup journey ended earlier than Ronaldo had hoped, but the tournament still produced a major personal achievement for the captain.
In Portugal’s group-stage match against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo scored twice and became the first player ever to find the net in six separate World Cups. His World Cup scoring story began in Germany in 2006 when he scored against Iran. Four years later in South Africa, he scored against North Korea. He continued the run against Ghana in Brazil 2014 before producing his best World Cup campaign in Russia 2018, where he scored four goals, including a hat-trick against Spain.
Ronaldo added another World Cup goal against Ghana in Qatar 2022. His double against Uzbekistan at the 2026 tournament extended the record and placed him alone in football history. The goals also took his overall World Cup tally to 10. No other player has managed to score in six different editions of the tournament, making it one of the most unique records of Ronaldo’s career.
Cristiano Ronaldo passes Eusébio before Portugal suffer Spain heartbreak
The goals against Uzbekistan brought another milestone. Ronaldo moved ahead of Portuguese legend Eusébio on Portugal’s all-time World Cup scoring list.
Eusébio had scored nine World Cup goals, all during the 1966 tournament in England. For decades, that mark stood as the highest World Cup scoring total by a Portuguese player. Ronaldo’s brace pushed him into first place with 10 goals. However, the record-breaking tournament did not get the ending Ronaldo wanted. Portugal faced Spain in the Round of 16 with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. The match remained level deep into stoppage time as both teams struggled to find a breakthrough.Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón denied Ronaldo on multiple occasions, while Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa also produced important saves to keep his side in the contest. Chances came at both ends, but neither team could convert them during normal time.Just when extra time seemed certain, Ferran Torres played a pass into the box and Mikel Merino finished calmly in the 91st minute to give Spain the lead. Portugal could not respond in the remaining minutes, and the final whistle confirmed their exit.As the match ended, Ronaldo was visibly emotional. Earlier in the tournament, he had already confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be his last. That made the defeat even harder to take.Portugal’s campaign may have ended sooner than expected, but Ronaldo still leaves the World Cup stage with a record that stands alone. His final appearance did not bring the trophy he wanted, yet it added another chapter to a career filled with historic achievements.
