Legendary Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo finished his FIFA World Cup career with a bizarre record, having shot several times at the goal but without creating any opportunities for his teammates, as Portugal made a Round of 16 exit after a 0-1 defeat to Spain.
Ronaldo has won it all in a trophy-laden career at some of Europe’s biggest clubs and tasted European glory with his nation.
Despite an illustrious career and a trophy cabinet overflowing with silverware, Ronaldo will finish without the one prize that eluded him, a FIFA World Cup winner’s medal.

Ronaldo endured a subdued display in Portugal’s disappointing Round of 16 loss to Spain in Texas, struggling to impose himself on the contest.
Ronaldo attempted 17 shots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup without creating a single opportunity for a Portugal teammate, the highest number of attempts by any footballer in a single edition of the tournament since such records started in 1966.
Ronaldo went past former Mexico midfielder Alberto García Aspe, who attempted 15 shots at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Strangely, Mexico also lost to Germany in the Round of 16 in that edition.
Ronaldo, the leading scorer in the history of men’s international football, said that he would leave the FIFA World Cup stage ‘with a clear conscience’.
Ronaldo’s finest FIFA World Cup campaign will always be the run to the semi-finals two decades ago. His underwhelming display in the disappointing Round of 16 loss to Spain reflected the reality of his twilight years, a pale imitation of the footballer who once struck fear into defenders around the world.
