Security officials said that the first temporary base was set up in July last year along the Pahalgam–Tral–Harwan–Dachigam axis, soon after Operation Mahadev.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has established 43 temporary operating bases (TOBs) in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack to track and eliminate terrorists operating at high altitudes, security officials said on Wednesday.
These bases, established above the height of 6,000 feet, are used to house the troops of the central paramilitary force for a few days and launch search and assault operations in the heights where terrorists are holed up in the ‘dhoks’ (mud and stone huts).
According to sources, 26 of the 43 TOBs are located in the Kashmir region and 17 in the Jammu division. Each base houses around 16 to 25 CRPF personnel along with local police staff and is operational for a few days at a time to launch search and assault missions in mountainous terrain.
Security officials said that the first temporary base was set up in July last year along the Pahalgam–Tral–Harwan–Dachigam axis, soon after Operation Mahadev. As per security officials, terrorists involved in the Baisaran attack fled through hill routes connecting Pahalgam to Tral and onward to Dachigam. Three attackers were later neutralised under Operation Mahadev, which began on May 22 under a security plan drawn up a day after the attack.
The Army’s elite para commandos in July last year gunned down Sulieman alias Asif, the alleged mastermind of the April 22 attack, along with two of his associates, in an encounter at Mulnar in Harwan area near Dachigam National Park. The other terrorists killed in the action have been identified as Jibran, who was allegedly involved in the Sonamarg Tunnel attack last year, and Hamza Afghani.
To sustain operations in snow-laden terrain, the CRPF has procured specialised equipment, including tactical boots, winter jackets, heating devices, ergonomic ration bags, caps, gloves, sleeping bags and satellite phones.
Data shared by officials indicates that around two local terrorists and approximately 100 foreign terrorists are currently active in the region.
