The Central Reserve Police Force has initiated steps to establish a dedicated school in Jammu and Kashmir for specially abled and autistic children of its personnel.
This is a first-of-its kind initiative among the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and follows directions from the Welfare Directorate, which has sought fresh and updated data of children with special needs (CwSN), whose parents are willing to send them to school.
The proposed institution, tentatively named SAKSHAM, is planned to be set up at the CRPF Group Centre in Jammu’s Hiranagar. This will, however, be subject to sufficient demand from families.
RESPONSE FROM FAMILIES KEY FACTOR
According to internal communication accessed by News18, all sectors have been directed to compile accurate and verified details of eligible children and forward the consolidated data in a prescribed format within a stipulated timeline.
The final decision on the exact location and operations of the school will depend on the number of nominations received from willing parents.
Sources within the CRPF said the response from families will be a key determining factor. “The intent is to create a sustainable and professionally managed institution. For that, accurate data and genuine willingness from parents are essential," said an official familiar with the development.
If this works out, SAKSHAM could become a model welfare initiative for other CAPFs reinforcing the CRPF’s commitment to inclusive support for its personnel and their families.
WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE INITIATIVE?
Officials said the initiative aims to address long-standing challenges faced by CRPF families posted in remote and sensitive areas, where access to specialised educational and therapeutic facilities remains limited.
Many personnel are deployed in difficult terrains, including parts of Jammu and Kashmir, often away from urban centres where structured support systems for autistic and differently abled children are available.
The proposed school is expected to provide specialised education, therapeutic support, and trained faculty to cater to diverse developmental needs. If implemented, it will mark a significant expansion of welfare measures within the CRPF, going beyond financial aid and scholarships to create a dedicated institutional support system.
At present, while some armed forces and defence welfare organisations operate special education wings, no CAPF runs an exclusive, dedicated school specifically for specially abled children of its personnel. The CRPF’s initiative is therefore being viewed as a pioneering step within the paramilitary framework.
