Jabalpur: A seven-and-a-half-month pregnant woman and her unborn child died in Jabalpur after she was forced to walk nearly a kilometre to reach transport because the road leading to her home was in such poor condition that no vehicle driver was willing to enter the area. The deceased, identified as Mamta Kushwaha, a resident of Brajpuri Colony, developed labour pain on Friday evening .According to Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Naveen Kothari, the road connecting her house to the main road was badly damaged, forcing an ASHA worker to escort her on foot for nearly one kilometre before she could access transportation. From the main road, Mamta was taken to Elgin Hospital in a hire dauto-rickshaw.
However, her condition deteriorated and she developed severe breathing difficulties. Doctors referred her to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College Hospital, where she was placed on ventilator support. Despite efforts by doctors, both Mamta and her unborn child died during treatment.Health officials said preliminary findings indicate that Mamta ha dundergone antenatal check-ups twice during the month.
However, her pregnancy registration was reportedly delayed by nearly four months as she had spent time in Satna. The inquiry has also focused on whether established emergency protocol swere followed. Officials said the ASHA worker should have contacted the 108 ambulance service instead of arranging transport through other means. CMHO Naveen Kothari said instructions have been issued for a detailed investigation and action will be taken against anyone found negligent.
