BENGALURU: A 33-year-old man was killed after he was allegedly deliberately run over by a car following a drunken brawl after a local cricket tournament in Bengaluru, police said on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Prashanth M, a bodybuilder who lived in Veerasandra in the city. Police said the incident took place on Sunday evening after an argument broke out between Prashanth and Roshan Hegde, 37, a software engineer, on an open ground behind a mall in Electronics City. How the events unfolded According to investigators, a group of men had gathered in Kammasandra to play cricket and later consumed alcohol. “In a drunken stupor, Prashanth allegedly approached Roshan, seeking a lighter and abused him, triggering an argument,” a police officer said. The quarrel soon turned violent, with both men allegedly attacking each other using beer bottles. During the scuffle, Roshan sustained a severe cut on his tongue. As tensions rose, Roshan got into his Tata Safari SUV and attempted to leave the area. Police said Prashanth chased the vehicle and clung to its door as it sped along the Veerasandra–Kammasandra Road. Investigators allege that Roshan then deliberately accelerated the car, first crashing it into a compound wall and then reversing and ramming it into a tree.
Dashcam footage later revealed that “Roshan had suddenly accelerated and deliberately rammed the vehicle, an SUV, first against a compound wall and then reversed and crashed it again against a tree. In the twin blows, victim Prashanth, who was clinging on the vehicle from outside, suffered serious injuries and died on the spot.” Initially, the police received a call reporting what appeared to be a road accident. A passerby, who mistook the incident for a crash, alerted emergency services.
Roshan was rushed to hospital with injuries. However, during a preliminary investigation, officers noticed a dash camera inside the vehicle. “The case was initially treated as an accident until M Narayana, DCP (Electronics City), noticed the dashcam on the vehicle and ordered the footage to be examined.” After reviewing the footage, police concluded the act was intentional. “After confirming it was an intentional act, we went to the hospital where Roshan was undergoing treatment. Doctors informed us that his tongue was almost severed and that he underwent a minor surgery. He was discharged on Monday and was taken into custody for interrogation,” Narayana told TOI. Roshan Hegde was later arrested by Hebbagodi police on charges of murder.
