Anant Moon, 55, who was battling advanced liver cirrhosis for more than three years, recently underwent a successful liver transplant at a private hospital in Nagpur after his daughter, Anvita Moon, stepped forward as donor

Nagpur: As the nation readies to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday, a 20-year-old engineering student from Amravati has given her father the most meaningful gift — a second chance at life.Anant Moon, 55, who was battling advanced liver cirrhosis for more than three years, recently underwent a successful liver transplant at a private hospital in Nagpur after his daughter, Anvita Moon, stepped forward as donor.Doctors said, Moon’s condition began deteriorating despite treatment at multiple hospitals. Medical evaluation revealed a liver transplant was the only viable option. As search for a suitable donor continued and his health worsened, Anvita volunteered to donate a portion of her liver. The decision came at a crucial stage in her life. A third-year engineering student, Anvita was preparing for her university exams while undergoing medical, psychological and fitness assessments required for living organ donation. She appeared for her theory exams before the surgery and completed her practical examination after recovering from the procedure.Doctors said the transplant was carried out by a multidisciplinary team with the donor surgery performed with robot-assisted technology, allowing a minimally invasive procedure and faster recovery for the donor.

“The patient was suffering from advanced liver disease and required urgent transplantation. Through careful planning, comprehensive donor evaluation and coordinated teamwork, we were able to achieve a successful outcome,” said Dr Rajvilas Narkhede, GI surgeon and liver transplant specialist.Dr Gaurav Chaubal, liver transplant specialist associated with the procedure, said living-donor liver transplantation continues to be a life-saving option for patients with end-stage liver disease, while advances in robotic surgery are helping improve donor recovery. The surgery was successful, with the transplanted liver segment functioning well in the recipient. Anvita was discharged within six days of the operation, while her father returned home after 13 days.
