Amid the ongoing cases of violence and assaults in West Bengal Universities, Governor CV Ananda Bose said that the elimination of violence from universities is of primary importance and called for the steps to be taken to ensure the safety of women in the campuses.

“Elimination of violence from university campuses is of primary importance, and as Chancellor, I am aware of this. I am calling a meeting of all Vice Chancellors to ensure that campuses remain free from violence and discipline is maintained. Steps will be taken to ensure that campuses are safe for women," Bose said.

The governor’s statement came days after a 24-year-old student of the South Calcutta Law College was allegedly raped by two senior students and an alumnus of the institute on June 25. The police is probing the matter and have arrested the accused individuals.

According to the reports, the student was allegedly raped after she rejected a marriage proposal from the main accused, 31-year-old Monojit Mishra, who is a former student of the college. Two others — also students at the college — stood by and watched the crime unfold.

The case was reported nearly 10 months after a similar crime at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata led to city and nationwide protests.

The RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case that took place in 2024 sent shockwaves across the nation and drawn furious protests from concerned medical professionals, gender and civil society activists.
