New Delhi: An industrial disaster in Chhattisgarh has become a big legal and corporate fiasco, with officials filing an FIR against Anil Agarwal, the chairman of Vedanta Group and various officials of the company. The accident, that happened a few days ago in the Sakti district, has already cost at least 20 lives and dozens of others in a critical condition, so the question of the safety of the industrial standards is quite serious.

Preliminary reports indicate that the blast was in one of the boiler units in a Vedanta power plant. Employees on site reported a large, explosive blowout and flames and heavy smoke covering the plant in a few seconds. Lots of workers were taken unawares and they had very little time to get out. The severity of the blast resulted in panic situation making the plant a site of panic and desperation. Quick response teams came to the rescue, fighting the fire and time to save trapped employees. Some of the injured were rushed to the nearby hospitals, and hours of recovery operations went on.

Initial evidence indicates that laxity and potential failure to observe safety measures could have contributed to the tragedy. The initial investigations are directed to the problems of boiler maintenance and operational control. The government is currently investigating on whether safety checks were properly done and whether warning signs were neglected before the explosion.

In a unprecedented action, the police have filed an FIR against the top officials, including the Vedanta chairman, Anil Agarwal. The allegations are said to be associated with laxity resulting in fatality and lack of worker safety measures. This is a grave development in the case, as investigators are starting to patch together responsibility of one of the worst industrial accidents in the area in recent years.

The numbers are accompanied by bereaved families that have lost their breadwinners. A significant number of victims were the daily wage earners and their abrupt loss has plunged families into emotional and financial hardships. The local governments have declared the compensation of the families of the victims but this does not bring a lot of relief to many after such an irreparable loss.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the safety in the workplace in the heavy industries in India. According to the experts, even with the regulations, enforcement is weak, exposing workers to risks. The question of whether or not this disaster could have been averted is going to be part of the investigation as it continues to deepen, and who will be held accountable.
