US President Donald Trump on Friday said that an agreement to end the conflict with Iran is “mostly complete," adding that Tehran has agreed to suspend its nuclear programme indefinitely. He also added that Iran will not receive any “frozen funds from the US."
In a conversation with Bloomberg, Donald Trump said that an agreement to end the conflict, which began between the US, Israel, and Iran in late February, is close to completion. He indicated that discussions on a final deal are likely to take place over the weekend.
“Most of the main points are finalized. It’ll go pretty quickly," Trump said.
His remarks came as Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the Strait of Hormuz would be opened for commercial vessels, though under certain conditions. This development is being seen as a possible sign of easing tensions in the region.
In another major development, Trump also announced that the Strait of Hormuz is “completely open and ready for business and full passage."
“THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ IS COMPLETELY OPEN AND READY FOR BUSINESS AND FULL PASSAGE," adding that the blockade “will remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete," he wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Shipping Route Reopens Amid Diplomatic Signals
Tehran also announced on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz has been reopened for commercial shipping, marking a significant step amid ongoing efforts to ease tensions in the region. The move came alongside a ceasefire taking effect in Lebanon, fuelling expectations that key hurdles in a possible US-Iran agreement may be easing.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that the blockade on the crucial energy route would be lifted following the start of the truce.
Lebanon Truce Brings Temporary Relief
In Lebanon, the 10-day ceasefire has allowed displaced families to return to their homes. Many are going back to south Beirut and other badly affected southern areas.
The truce has given people some relief, but it is unclear how long the peace will last.
US And Israel Signal Diverging Positions
While Israeli leaders maintained that their military operations against Iran-backed Hezbollah are not over, US President Donald Trump stated that Israel had been “prohibited" by Washington from carrying out further strikes.
“Enough is enough!" he declared, adding that the United States would work with Lebanon “and deal with the Hezbollah situation in an appropriate manner."
