Security agencies and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have launched a massive investigation after CCTV footage captured a suspicious act near the cab road area of Howrah Station. The footage allegedly shows a suspect throwing an object moments before a fire and smoke scare erupted during peak passenger hours, raising fears of a deliberate attempt to trigger panic and chaos.

According to officials, the footage shows a suspect allegedly throwing an object or cover at the location, following which smoke and fire were reported moments later. Investigators believe the act may have been timed deliberately to create panic and chaos among commuters at one of the country’s busiest railway stations.

The incident comes amid recent intelligence inputs and security warnings indicating that the railway network could be vulnerable to attempts at sabotage and disruption.

Sources said the suspicious act was detected shortly before a fire incident was reported in a coach of the Mithila Express. Authorities suspect the incident may have been aimed not only at disrupting railway operations but also at triggering a stampede-like situation among thousands of passengers present at the station during rush hour.

Security agencies are currently analysing CCTV footage and conducting a detailed probe to identify the suspect seen in the video. Investigators are also examining whether the incident was part of a larger coordinated conspiracy to compromise public safety.

Following the incident, high alert protocols have been activated across major railway terminals nationwide, with security personnel instructed to intensify surveillance and monitoring of sensitive areas within railway premises.

Officials said further investigation is underway and additional details are expected to emerge after forensic and technical analysis of the footage and materials recovered from the site.
