Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condoled the victims of the deadly school shooting in Canada, expressing shock over the tragedy and extending India’s solidarity with the Canadian people. “Deeply shocked by the horrendous shooting in Canada. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands in solidarity with the people of Canada in this moment of profound grief."

His remarks came after a mass shooting at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, a remote mountain town in northeast British Columbia, left at least 10 people dead in what is being described as Canada’s deadliest school shooting in decades.

Police said they found six people dead and dozens injured when they arrived at the school early Tuesday afternoon. Another person died on the way to hospital. Authorities later said two more bodies were discovered at a home in the township, allegedly linked to the suspect. The shooter was found dead at the school with what police described as a self-inflicted injury.

Two victims were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, while around 25 others were treated at a local medical centre. Police have identified the suspect but have not released further details, including whether the shooter was a student. Officers also did not confirm how many of the deceased were children.

“We are not in a place now to be able to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy," Superintendent Ken Floyd of the British Columbia Royal Canadian Mounted Police said, adding that authorities would attempt to determine what transpired.
