Kamal Dhyani died after falling into a pit in Janakpuri, turning his parents’ anniversary into tragedy. His family waited with cake, but the celebration became a night of loss.

On Friday, Kamal had called his twin brother Karan at 12.50 am to say he would be home in 15 minutes.

On Friday, Kamal had called his twin brother Karan at 12.50 am to say he would be home in 15 minutes.

The family of Kamal Dhyani, the 25-year-old who lost his life after falling into a pit while riding his motorcycle in Janakpuri, was waiting for his return to begin his parents’ anniversary celebrations at their home.

A cake and candles had been arranged for the occasion. However, the cake lay uncut on the dining table, the candles were never lit, and plates were never laid out. What was meant to be a quiet wedding anniversary celebration instead became the night the Dhyani family lost him.

A call centre employee, Kamalhad called his twin brother Karan at 12.50 am on Friday to say he would be home in 15 minutes. He asked his mother to make chapatis and said he was on his way. That call was the last time his family heard his voice.

When Kamal did not return and stopped answering calls, his family grew anxious. They stepped out into the night, first going to his workplace in Rohini, where they were told he had already left. From there, they went from police station to police station, searching deserted roads and hoping to find his motorcycle. Hours passed without any information. By morning, the police called with news that ended all hope. Kamal had been found dead.

His body, with his helmet still on, and his mud-covered motorcycle were discovered inside a 15-foot-deep trench dug for a sewer pipeline rehabilitation project by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) in Janakpuri. Police said he had fallen into the open pit while riding home.

The motorcycle was a birthday gift Kamal had bought with his own savings. Friends said he was proud of it and used it daily. He was described as quiet, hardworking and focused on supporting his family.

For Kamal’s parents, the shock was devastating. His father had spent the entire night searching for him. His mother was informed later, as the family feared the impact of the news on her health. The anniversary they had planned to mark passed in silence.

“We told our mother much later," Karan said, India Today reported. “She wouldn’t have survived hearing it suddenly. Our father had been searching all night. In the morning, he had to see his son’s body wrapped in a bag," he added.

The house that was meant to host a celebration fell quiet. Decorations were never put up. The cake was removed untouched. A chair at the dining table remains empty.

Kamal lived with his parents and brothers in Kailashpuri. His father and elder brother are priests. His twin brother is preparing for the Chartered Accountant examination. Those close to him said his priority was his family and their future.

A day meant to celebrate a marriage instead became the darkest day of their lives — a night of waiting that ended in irreversible loss.
