NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday came down heavily on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) over its decision declaring wrestler Vinesh Phogat ineligible to participate in domestic events. The court questioned the rationale behind the move and said that sporting disputes should not end up harming athletes or the sport itself. The court also asked the Centre to constitute an expert committee to assess Phogat’s status and ensure her participation in the upcoming Asian Games selection trials.Observing the ongoing conflict, the court remarked that regardless of internal feuds or disagreements, the larger interest of wrestling must be protected. It said such disputes should not impact the career of athletes or the growth of the sport.(With agency inputs)
