 Man jumps off Yamuna bridge during video call; sister says he was depressed after breakup; search underway

NEW DELHI: A 21-year-old man allegedly jumped off the Yamuna bridge while on a video call with his sister on Sunday night. Police said a PCR call was received at Sunlight Colony police station around 11:22 pm, following which an extensive search operation was launched.According to officials, the caller reported that her brother had leapt into the river. When police and PCR teams reached the spot, they found a motorcycle and a mobile phone abandoned on the bridge.The caller, identified as Suman, daughter of Bal Kishan and a resident of Bihar, is a Civil Services aspirant currently living in Karol Bagh. She reached the Yamuna bridge following the incident.

During questioning, Suman told police that her brother, Rithik, had been staying with her for a few months while seeking employment.

She added that Rithik had been battling depression for the past two to three months after a breakup with his girlfriend.On the night of the incident, Suman said Rithik called her via video call, during which the two argued. In a moment of frustration, he allegedly jumped off the bridge railing into the river.A missing person complaint has been registered at Sunlight Colony police station.Following the call, the local police alerted the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire services, and other emergency teams. An NDRF motorboat team arrived within 15–20 minutes and began searching the river. Teams from the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and fire services were also on the spot.The search and rescue operation continued throughout the night and is still ongoing. The victim has not yet been located.(With inputs from agencies)
