Delhi Rain News: The prayers of Delhi-NCR residents were finally answered on Thursday evening as much-needed rain lashed several parts of the national capital and adjoining regions, bringing major relief from the relentless heatwave conditions gripping the region over the past few days.

The showers led to a sharp drop in temperatures across Delhi-NCR, with several areas witnessing a fall of between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius within hours. In south Delhi, Ayanagar recorded an 11-degree Celsius drop while Mehrauli saw temperatures dip by nearly 10 degrees Celsius. Narayana witnessed a fall of around 6 degrees Celsius, while Gurgaon recorded one of the steepest declines at nearly 12 degrees Celsius, according to a report by The Indian Express.

The weather shift came after days of extreme heat, during which temperatures crossed the 45-degree Celsius mark at multiple stations across Delhi. Even nights had turned uncomfortable, with Delhi recording the season’s first “warm night" on May 21 after the minimum temperature touched 31.9 degrees Celsius.

According to weather data, light rainfall was recorded at several stations between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm. Safdarjung received 3.3 mm rainfall, while Palam recorded 3.1 mm. Pitampura, Mayur Vihar and Jafarpur logged 0.5 mm rain each during the period.

Delhi Weather Forecast: How Long Will Relief Continue?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the current spell of rain and thunderstorm activity is likely to continue in Delhi-NCR till May 31.

Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather said thunderstorm activity had already developed over northern Rajasthan and was expected to continue affecting Delhi through the night. He added that the intensity of storms could increase further on Friday before the weather system gradually shifts towards Gujarat between May 30 and 31.

“The current spell of pre-monsoon rains is likely to be stronger than the showers witnessed earlier this month and in April, leading to widespread rainfall activity across Delhi," Palawat said.

After Thursday’s rainfall, temperatures in Delhi-NCR are expected to remain relatively moderate, with the mercury likely to stay between 34°C and 35°C till Sunday. However, weather experts said the ongoing wet spell is expected to clear by June 1, after which temperatures could rise sharply again by 5°C to 6°C as dry and scorching summer conditions gradually make a comeback across the region next week.

What Triggered The Sudden Rainfall?

According to weather experts, the sudden change in weather has been triggered by a combination of atmospheric systems, including a western disturbance over the Himalayan region, an induced cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining areas, and moisture-laden winds arriving from the Bay of Bengal. These factors significantly increased humidity levels over Delhi-NCR, creating favourable conditions for thunderstorms and rain activity
