India Heatwave Today: India appeared to dominate the global heat chart in a striking way on Tuesday. According to AQI.in’s live temperature rankings at 12:30pm, all of the world’s top 100 hottest cities were located in India, highlighting the intensity of the heatwave conditions sweeping large parts of the country.

The list was not limited to smaller towns alone. Several prominent cities and major urban centres also featured in the rankings, including New Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Chandigarh, Agra, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Nagpur and Ludhiana.

The highest temperatures on the list touched a blistering 46 degrees Celsius. Auraiya, Banda and Etawah occupied the top three spots globally at 46°C each in the AQI.in rankings.

Several other cities in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana followed closely at 45°C, including Aligarh, Mainpuri, Kurukshetra, Panipat and Karnal.

A large cluster of cities recorded temperatures of 44°C, stretching across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Odisha. These included Prayagraj, Hisar, Jalandhar, Bathinda, Satna and Balangir.

Meanwhile, the 43°C bracket featured a mix of major and tier-2 cities such as Chandigarh, Agra, Gwalior, Jammu, Pathankot and Varanasi.

Even towards the lower end of the top 100 rankings, temperatures remained extremely high. New Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Rohtak were all still recording 41°C around midday.

The rankings reflected how widespread the heat was across northern, central and parts of eastern India, with cities from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh dominating the chart.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist across large parts of northwest and central India over the coming days. According to the IMD’s latest forecast bulletin issued on May 19 morning, heatwave conditions are expected over Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha through much of the week.

The weather department further said heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely over “few pockets" of West Uttar Pradesh from May 19 to 24, while East Uttar Pradesh could continue witnessing severe heat conditions through May 20.

The IMD also noted that the country’s highest officially recorded maximum temperature on Sunday was 47.6°C in Banda. The department has forecast a gradual rise of 2-3°C in maximum temperatures across many parts of Northwest India over the next few days.

Apart from the heatwave warning, the IMD forecast thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in parts of Northeast and South India over the coming week, even as much of North and Central India continues to reel under extreme daytime temperatures.
