Dharwad: The 93rd birthday of CNR Rao, one of India’s most distinguished scientists, was celebrated with a Science Thought Programme at Mind Wave Edu Hub in Dharwad on Wednesday.
The event highlighted Rao’s extraordinary contributions to scientific research and his lifelong efforts to nurture scientific temper among young minds.Educationist Mahesh Mashal described Rao’s remarkable achievements as a source of inspiration for students across the country. He said celebrating the life and work of eminent scientists such as Rao encourages young people to pursue knowledge, innovation and research.Renowned scientist Shivakumar delivered the keynote address, tracing Rao’s illustrious scientific journey and explaining the significance of his contributions to modern science. He noted thatRao has published more than 1,700 research papers and authored more than 65 books, making him one of the world’s most prolific scientists.Addressing the students, Shivakumar explained the distinct roles of scientists, technologists and engineers.
He said scientists expand human knowledge by uncovering the mysteries of nature, technologists apply that knowledge to develop new technologies and products, while engineers transform these innovations into practical solutions that benefit society.He further emphasised that throughout his life, CNR Rao has championed the development of scientific temperament among children, and consistently encouraged curiosity, critical thinking and a spirit of inquiry — qualities that are essential for building a progressive and knowledge-driven nation.As part of the celebration, a documentary showcasing Rao’s life, achievements and contributions to science was screened. Students also visited the science laboratory and an exhibition featuring milestones from Rao’s illustrious career, gaining a deeper appreciation of his enduring legacy and the transformative power of scientific research.
