When investigators began parsing the manifesto of the gunman behind the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, one detail stood out. Almost every senior official linked to Donald Trump was listed as a potential target except one—Kash Patel.

But why exactly was the FBI director “spared"? Authorities are now examining multiple theories, ranging from ideology to operational strategy, and even religion.

Was Religion A Factor?

One of the more widely discussed possibilities is Patel’s identity. According to The New York Post, investigators believe suspect Cole Allen’s manifesto reflected anti-Christian views, raising the possibility that Patel, who is Hindu, may not have fit the attacker’s ideological target profile.

“[Allen] was pretty anti-Christian and Kash is Hindu," the source said, explaining that the manifesto reportedly referenced religious justifications and the suspect framed his violence in moral and ideological terms.

In simple terms, if the attacker’s grievance was tied to a specific religious worldview, Patel may have been seen as outside that frame.

‘Rules Of Engagement’

Another explanation is more tactical than ideological. Investigators say the gunman had laid out explicit “rules of engagement", including avoiding harm to law enforcement personnel and minimising casualties among non-political targets.

Patel, as FBI director, may have been excluded under this logic. However, this theory is complicated by the fact that a law enforcement officer was still shot during the attack (though protected by a vest).

What The Manifesto Reveals

According to reports, the suspect had drawn up a ranked hit list of administration officials, explicitly writing: “Administration officials (not including Kash Patel): they are targets". He sent the manifesto to his family just 10 minutes before the attack, framing the violence as a response to perceived injustices, using moral and political language to justify targeting officials.

The April 25 attack unfolded at the Washington Hilton where the gunman attempted to breach security with multiple weapons. The Secret Service, however, intervened before he could reach the main event. One officer was hit but survived due to protective gear and Trump and other officials were evacuated safely.

Allen has since been charged with attempted assassination and multiple firearms offences.

Angles Under Scrutiny

The Guardian reported that authorities are also examining Allen’s political motivations as the manifesto reportedly contained strong anti-Trump sentiment, indicating a politically driven attack.

Officials believe the suspect acted alone—in classic lone wolf behaviour—though investigations into influences and radicalisation are ongoing. The incident has also triggered a wave of conspiracy theories online, many of which have been debunked or remain unverified.

The question of why Kash Patel was excluded is more than a curiosity; it offers a window into the attacker’s mindset. Because in an attack that appears meticulously planned, who was not targeted may be as revealing as who was.
