Legendary footballer Diego Maradona’s daughter, Gianinna, has said that there was a plan to keep the former stable, but somehow it fell apart, which eventually led to Maradona’s untimely death.

Maradona, regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60 because of heart failure and acute pulmonary oedema, a condition involving fluid build-up in the lungs, while recovering at home from surgery for a brain clot.

There have been a lot of discussions and debates around Maradona’s death, with many claiming that he passed away due to medical negligence.

“There was definitely a plan and someone was in charge of it, but things got out of their control," Gianinna said while speaking to the media.

She made the remarks on the sidelines of the trial in San Isidro involving seven medical professionals, including a neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist and a nurse, who have been accused by prosecutors of gross negligence in connection with Maradona’s death.

The seven deny responsibility and say that Maradona passed away from natural causes. They face prison terms of between eight and 25 years if convicted.

Gianinna blamed Maradona’s former lawyer and representative, Matias Morla and his former assistant, Maximiliano Pomargo.

The duo aren’t among those charged in the negligence case, but are all set to face a separate trial over the alleged fraudulent management of Maradona’s commercial rights.

A date for the proceedings is yet to be announced.

“I cannot quite bring myself to think through this plan, that they wanted to kill him. Did Morla want to have my father’s life in his hands? Surely," Gianinna said.

She added that some of the defendants had persuaded the family in November 2020 that Maradona would recover better from neurosurgery at home rather than being admitted to a psychiatric clinic.
