As the world continues to see a fractured geopolitical landscape with conflicts on multiple fronts, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi outlined what he views as the defining traits of today’s global environment: “Disorder, distrust and dichotomy in alliances".

General Dwivedi was addressing a seminar on “Security to Prosperity: Smart Power for Sustained National Growth" at the Centre for Land Warfare Studies in Delhi.

Speaking at the event, he said: “Today, the world around us is sending a more complex signal. Disorder, distrust and dichotomy in alliances", as quoted by news agency ANI.

General Dwivedi highlighted how today’s world witnesses power politics being used to reorganise prosperity.

“We were promised a world where prosperity would make power politics obsolete. Instead, we have a world where power politics is being used to reorganise prosperity…" he said.

The comments come at a time when the world is witnessing a fragile ceasefire between U.S.-Israel and Iran, with repeated threats and salvos from both sides.

Army Chief On ‘Operation Sindoor’

Hailing the Indian Army’s response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir — which killed 26 people on April 22, 2025 — General Upendra Dwivedi said ‘operation Sindoor’ delivered military precision, informative control, diplomatic signalling and economic resolve as one coherent national act.

“It struck deep, dismantled terror infrastructure, punctured a long-standing strategic assumption and then stopped deliberately and purposefully. The deliberate halt after 88 hours was smart power in its most complete expression, knowing exactly which instrument to apply, at what intensity and precisely when to convert a military movement into a strategic one", he said, according to ANI.

The Pahalgam incident marked one of the deadliest terror attacks in decades in Kashmir, where tourists were targeted and gunned down by terrorists.

On May 7, the Indian Army launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ in retaliation for the attack, killing over a hundred terrorists and destroying nine terror camps operating in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK).
